Benefits of “Doing Good to Feel Good” on Your Mental Health

Stress and disconnection are becoming more prevalent in society as people need a simple, meaningful way to support their mental health. One powerful practice that is often overlooked is doing good for others. Acts of kindness may seem small or even secondary to self-care; however, research consistently shows that “Those of us who are kind and compassionate experience clear benefits to our well-being and happiness. We may even live longer. Kindness also helps reduce stress and improve our emotional well-being” (Mental Health Foundation).

The Mental Health Foundation also mentions how the benefits of practicing acts of kindness could be creating a sense of belonging and reducing isolation, helping to keep things in perspective, and making the world a happier place, and the more that you do for others, the more you do to help yourself. In a world that is so intrinsically focused, helping others allows you to take your mind off your own problems and enlighten your perspective toward someone else’s life for a change.

When helping others, science has found that it can boost oxytocin, dopamine, and even serotonin (Cedars Sinai). These are all neurotransmitters in the brain that help with regulating mood. Doctors at Cedars Sinai are even studying how kindness can be a treatment for pain, depression, and anxiety because of how impactful it is on the body. However, they have found that the effect is not long-lasting unless it is repeated. That is why kindness is a practice we must incorporate into our lives as a routine.

Helping others doesn’t have to be this lofty thing we move our schedules around for or take off work to do. It can be as simple as holding the door open for the person behind you, buying food for the person outside the store, practicing empathy and patience toward strangers, or sending a thoughtful message to someone you know. Doing these types of things not only benefits your mental health, but it also strengthens the community around you. What you pour into others, you also receive back.

With all this being said, as the world can seemingly become more dismal by the day, let’s not forget the power we have to bring light back in. You never know the impact you will have on someone else’s day by simply choosing to be kind, smile more, and selflessly choose others over yourself. Let’s not forget, not only does it feel good to do good, but science proves that it improves our lives when we create a routine of it. What act of kindness will you incorporate into your life today?

Some simple ideas for you to incorporate into your routine:

Address people by their name

Leave a positive review for a business you appreciate

Let someone merge into your lane while driving

Tip your server a little extra, if you can

Noticing those around you and smiling

If you or someone you know is struggling with mental health, reaching out for support is a strong and important step. Kindness toward yourself matters just as much as kindness toward others. Feel free to check out our Resource Directory for more mental health resources.
