Carolina Gutierrez

Tell us a little about yourself…

Hello, my name is Carolina Gutierrez, I am a 25-year-old college student pursuing my bachelor’s in psychology. Two years ago, I transferred from East Los Angeles College with my AA in psychology and AA in communication studies. One day I hope to become a life coach for college students and start a podcast about mental health.

What is your connection to Orange County?

I am currently a student at California State University Fullerton, and I work at Counseling and Psychological Services (CAPS) as a Mental Wellness Peer Educator. My role is to promote the importance of mental health to all CSUF students by providing resources based on their needs.

Share a little bit of your outlook on life…

Currently, I am trying to find myself and explore new things in life. For instance, travel, discover new hobbies, prioritize my mental health, and meet new people. I try to be as positive as I can when overwhelming situations occur. Although sometimes it might be difficult to overcome since the mind is powerful, I always tell myself that life is too short to worry about things I cannot control.

    What is your favorite book?

Growing up I did not read much. I started reading consistently once I started college, but I recently just read my first book called We’ll Always Have Summer. It is based on a TV show called The Summer I Turned Pretty. I guess I enjoy reading cheesy romantic stories.

What is your favorite self-care activity?

On a self-care day, I love going to this coffee shop to buy myself an iced lavender matcha latte. I walk around the Claremont Village with my dog Mocha and admire nature which brings me peace. I try to have a self-care day once a week because I believe it is a priority to take care of your well-being.

What drew you to being involved with community mental health work or advocacy?

In my previous community, mental health awareness was not spread as much. I always wanted to help people who were struggling with their mental health because it is a challenge when there are not many resources provided to them. I chose to be involved as a mental health educator to express the importance of mental health and let others know that they are not alone.

What do you think Orange County can do more to help reduce the stigma surrounding mental health?

I believe that Orange County should provide more workshops open for the community to attend to gain more knowledge on the importance of mental health.

How did transferring from a community college to a 4-year university affect your mental health?

When I transferred from a community college to a 4-year university it was a huge transition. I noticed that CSUF was diverse, and the community was different from the environment I was in before. I did have anxiety on my first day of school because I felt a bit uncomfortable. Especially after Covid-19, it was a challenge to socialize again with other people. However, I believe that feeling is normal. I have met incredible people throughout my educational journey and as long as you focus on your goals everything will go smoothly.

What advice do you have for a student who is currently in the transfer process?

It is valid to feel anxious or overwhelmed when transitioning to a new environment that is out of your comfort zone. Remember that you are probably not the only one who is feeling that way. Explore and enjoy every moment of it.

**Staff note:  Counselors are available on all college campuses, we encourage students who may be struggling or feeling overwhelmed with the transfer process to seek assistance at their college counseling center.

Why do you think youth/young adults should attend community mental health events, like those hosted by Connect-OC?

It is a great opportunity to find resources that will benefit your well-being at a low cost. Attending these events will also help you build a positive relationship with your community. Plus, there are always fun activities and goodies you can grab along the way.
