Nutrition and Mental Health

For the month of January, we hosted a coalition meeting discussing the connection between food and mental health. Food is one of the essential components of individual health. While it fuels you physically, what you eat can greatly impact your mental health! Researchers have conducted multiple studies to examine how dietary patterns can influence mental health such as exacerbating existing illnesses or improving mood.

For example, one study conducted by Lane et al., examined the relationship between ultra processed foods and mental health. The study found that those who had higher levels of stress had higher odds of consuming ultra-processed foods. Some foods may contribute to inflammation in the body, resulting in discomfort and higher rates of mental disorders.

This is why “feeding the brain” proper food is essential! To create serotonin, the brain uses nutrients such as vitamin B1, riboflavin, and copper to function properly. To learn more about this topic, visit our website and check out the recording!
